The City of Salem owns and operates its own public water and sewer systems, serving the City of Salem and an expanding customer base in the outlying rural area. A planned $7 million wastewater treatment system renovation brings to Salem one of the most advanced wastewater treatment facilities in Southern Illinois. The system can treat 2.5 MGD flow while having an excess flow capacity of 3.5 MGD.
