In August 2004, Officers were trained in employing less lethal tactics of defense. Salem Police Officers are certified in using Tasers and Bean Bag rounds. These allow officers to subdue violent individuals without injury of fatality. It also ensures safety of innocent bystanders.

As part of the Taser Certification, Officers volunteered to undergo a Taser shock.
