Sweney Corner committee member Penny Sweney said, "We are excited about the mural, which should bring back memories of all who sat at the soda fountain and had five cent cokes. Sweney's was a gathering place for young and old. From the start, my great-grandfather and several of the town businessmen, who were referred to as "The Board of Strategy", met in the back of the store to discuss what was going on in the world. As the years went by, you could still find the locals at the soda fountain every morning, drinking coffee and still talking about everything from the weather, to sports, to what was going on in town. It was a treat for kids who came to town with their parents to stop by Sweney's before going home. Junior and Senior High School kids would always go there after school to mingle. Everyone knew where Sweney's was, and had been there at one time or another. At the bus stop, you would see soldiers going off to war and coming back home, as well as people passing through fom all walks of life, making connections on the Greyhound Bus. Mr. Hubbell's art  will provide a lasting tribute to a Salem landmark. We hope those who remember Sweney's Drug Store will visit Sweney Corner and reminisce. Visitors of all ages will enjoy the mural, the fountain, the gardens and once again Sweney Corner will be a gathering place for this community."
A fundraising drive for the construction of Sweney Corner continues. The committee has received over $18,000 in cash, labor, and materials to date, with gifts ranging from a few dollars to $2,500. Donations of any amount are welcomed and appreciated. Individuals, organizations, corporations, alumni groups, sororities, clubs, families and friends interested in making a tax-deductible donation can contact Bev West at Salem City Hall or any committee member.
