About the Plant

The City of Salem owns and operates its own public water and sewer systems, serving the City of Salem and an expanding customer base in the outlying rural area. The Salem Wastewater Plant is a Class 1 Activated Sludge Facility and it treats an average of 1.5 million gallons of wastewater per day. The plant underwent a full renovation that was completed in 2007.  The system can now treat a daily average flow of 2.5 million gallons per day, with a maximum of just over 7 million gallons per day.  Informational tours are offered to groups by calling (618) 548-2222 Ext. 26 to schedule.
