The City of Salem Police Department utilizes civil service testing for police officers. Those interested in becoming police officers take the civil service test when it is offered. The testing process includes a written exam, physical agility test, and oral interview. An eligibility list is then posted for 2 years. When an officer position opens, the City hires from the eligibility list after completing an additional background investigation, polygraph test, psychological evaluation, and medical clearance.  The current list expires in April 2022. The next eligibility test will be December 11, 2021.  The City will announce the acceptance of applications for the test in November 2021.

The City of Salem employs telecommunicators for the 911 PSAP, which dispatches police, fire, and EMS services for the eastern half of Marion County. When an opening for a telecommunicator is available, acceptance of applications is announced in the media. Applicants must pass an oral interview, background investigation, and additional testing.
